Want to get this year's Mother's Day weekend off to a tasty start?
The Newington Rotary is giving you an opportunity to treat Mom or Grandma to a "delizioso" pasta dinner when the club hosts its Second Annual Pasta Dinner Fundraiser on Friday, May 12 from 4:30p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the St. Mary's School Hall on Willard Avenue in Newington. All proceeds benefit the club's annual scholarship fund for deserving college-bound high school seniors. Over the past 10 years Newington Rotary has awarded more than $22,000 in scholarships to graduates from Newington High School.
Newington Rotary has again enlisted the services of veteran volunteer pasta chefs Nick Mastroianni and Gary Tachak of North Haven to provide guests with an authentic Italian meal consisting of spaghetti and meatballs, salad, hearty rolls, non-alcoholic drinks and a delicious dessert to commemorate the special weekend. Chef Nick is related to one of Newington's Rotarians and has coordinated pasta meals for many fundraising organizations, including some held at St. Mary's.
"This is a night when both the young and old, Italians or want-to-be-Italians come together to eat a festive meal and to kick-off one of the most revered weekends of the year honoring that special woman whether it be a mother, step-mother, grandmother, wife, aunt, cousin or even an unrelated mentor whose lap, hug, smile or advice have filled your life with tender moments," says Rotarian Dave Tedeschi, chairman of this year's event.
Tedeschi noted that guests will enjoy live entertainment during dinner. The Duksa Family Funeral Homes located in Newington and New Britain is sponsoring musical entertainment featuring its staff vocalist, Steve Casillas. Casillas has performed at numerous community and statewide events and, at one time, served as cantor and guitarist at St. Mary's Church. A teacup raffle will also take place as a means of raising additional funds to benefit Rotary's scholarship program.
"Last year's event raised more than $1,500, not only from admission ticket sales but from local individuals and businesses who served as sponsors or donated goods to help minimize our costs," explains Tedeschi. "As Rotarians we don't mind the hard work it takes to put on an event, but we are extremely humbled when our friends step up to generously support and help us to do what we do best - give back to the community." Anyone who wants to help sponsor or make a donation for this event can contact Tedeschi at email@example.com
